Why your GS1 resolver should be on your own domain

GS1's guidance is that a Digital Link resolver runs on the brand's own domain. Here is why that matters — for control, for trust, and for avoiding vendor lock-in.

When you put a GS1 Digital Link on a product, the domain in that URL is a decision that outlives the campaign. GS1’s own guidance is that the resolver runs on the brand’s own domain, and it is worth understanding why.

The domain is printed, and hard to change

A GS1 Digital Link is a URL, and that URL goes on the pack. If it points at some-vendor.com/01/..., then every scan, forever, depends on that vendor keeping that path alive and pointing where you want. If you leave the vendor, or they change their URL scheme, or they go away, the printed code is stranded. A domain you control does not have that problem — you keep the domain, you keep the codes.

It is your identity at the point of scan

A shopper who scans a code and lands on your own domain sees you. Routing product scans through a third-party domain dilutes that, and — with QR codes being a known phishing vector — a familiar brand domain is also a trust signal that an unfamiliar vendor domain is not.

Sovereignty is in the standard

GS1 describes each resolver as sovereign over its own domain, with no central dependency: applications can query any resolver, and there is no single point of failure. Running on your own domain is how you take that sovereignty rather than renting it.

How redireo does it

redireo resolves your GS1 Digital Links on your own verified custom domain — the same custom-domain feature the rest of the product uses, with no per-domain surcharge. You point a domain at redireo, verify it, and your Digital Links live at https://your-domain/01/.... Because the resolver is dynamic, you edit where each link type points without touching the printed code. And because the domain is yours, moving away from redireo never strands a code — the URLs stay valid on a domain you already own. That is the difference between a resolver you rent and one you hold.
